Pervious Surfaces

Much of our urban environment is surrounded by impervious surfaces, surfaces that block water from seeping through. When rain arrives, it accumulaes onto road surfaces, increasing risks of flooding. In addition, as the water flows, it accumulates toxic debris and pollutants from runoff; this is harmful to our sewage systems and drinking water.

Pervious surfaces, such as rain gardens, absorb rain water, lowering risks of flooding as well as, carbon emissions. This educational model is intended to describe the difference between how impervious and pervious surfaces shape our environment to children and the general public.
