This thesis explores perceptions of fear and safety in the city of Mumbai by researching patterns of respectability and exploring rituals of disobedience and pleasure. The main question that guided my research follows:

How has the material, societal, and social construction of the city shaped the way that women’s movements and behaviors are controlled? How can rituals of disobedience, pleasure and love, re-represent and reshape the city?
